 Our Music Program

Music has always been an integral and valued aspect of worship and community life at St. Luke’s.

The musical offerings of the Senior Choir, and at times a youth choir or solo vocalist or instrumentalist; and of the Austin electropneumatic pipe organ and a piano contribute to the weekly Sunday 10 a.m. Eucharist and to most special services, such as

Good Friday Tenebrae.   The repertoire is eclectic -- grounded in traditional Anglican music from the early, baroque and classical periods, but also utilizing the best of well-composed and accessible contemporary music and the occasional American spiritual, or European or African folk piece.  Congregational singing is generally based in the 1980 Hymnal.  Organ preludes and postludes grace the 10 o’clock Sunday service.  Through the years parish fellowship and outreach to the Scituate community have been served through such musical vehicles as the production of sacred theatrical piece, the enhancement of a Maundy Thursday Seder supper with songs by our young adult choir, or choir participation at the ecumenical high school baccalaureate service.

St. Luke’s is fortunate to have as our current Music Director a most accomplished musician – a dynamic and personable choral director and a technically excellent and spiritually expressive organist/pianist.  Choir members and clergy greatly enjoy working with her. With undergraduate and master’s degrees in biblical studies, piano performance and accompaniment, she has recently completed her Doctorate of Musical Arts at New England Conservatory, where she also teaches and provides vocal coaching.

Our Senior Choir of 18 dedicated and talented parishioners is well balanced both in voice parts and in the blending of seasoned choristers with enthusiastic newer members.  The group enjoys the challenges of perfecting and adding expressive nuance to familiar pieces as well as venturing into new musical frontiers.  Most of all, they have a great time together, sharing with the parish the glory of God through music.  Our Young Adult Choir of several high schools students often provides an anthem at the 10 o’clock service and may augment Senior Choir voices at Holy Day or other special services.  Our very enthusiastic Angel Choir of elementary school children contributes a carefully prepared anthem several times a year.  Both youth choirs are ably directed by a parishioner who grew up at St. Luke’s before studying theater arts and vocal technique.  She has a real knack for working with children and often has parties or outings for the kids to enhance group cohesion and enjoyment of the choir experience.  A few times a year the congregation delights in the singing of our informal Cherub Choir of very young children of the Sunday school.

St. Luke’s musical resources also include a full array of hand bells and music arranged for bells that have many times in the past added their compelling notes to the service.  The Bell Choir currently awaits a new director to draw together and lead a group of regular ringers.  For the present our ringers occasionally join with another protestant parish to bring hand bell music to St. Luke’s.
